The most important thing when creating a lenticular print project is selecting the right lenticular lens film. Apart from the project itself, one should focus not only on it but also be familiar with the limitations of lenticular printing technology. With it, we can achieve effects such as flip, zoom, and morphing, 3D depth, or animation. Each requires individual preparation. We would now like to introduce you to all the types of effects through descriptions. The lenticular printing technology consists of visualizations: movement and three-dimensionality. 3D works great in television or cinema. Thanks to the lens, we can achieve a similar effect in print, where using special glasses is no longer necessary.

MORPH effect

Similar to animation, this is an effect of smooth transformation from one image to another. The difference, however, is that for the morphing effect, we need two images: the first and the last, while the intermediate frames are modifications of these two images. It’s a combination of animation and the flip effect. It’s perfect for smoothly transforming one object into another.

FLIP effect

Flip is a quick switch between two or three images that alternate depending on the viewing angle. In this case, the images should differ significantly from each other. The image change occurs in a step-like manner. However, there is an area where the images overlap.

ZOOM effect

It is a type of animation involving multi-frame zooming in or out of an object. It is most commonly used to surprise the viewer. A small dot in the center of the print suddenly changes into the desired object. It is usually used to focus the viewer’s attention on a specific part of the project.

3D effect

The 3D depth effect involves shifting as many objects as possible onto layers, resulting in a 3D depth illusion. The sense of spatiality is achieved by placing graphic elements on layers that appear to be at different distances from the viewer’s eyes. Objects on different layers should overlap, which enhances the depth effect. It’s essential to ensure that there are no ‘holes’ under the cut-out elements (the cut-out areas must be filled in according to the surrounding background). It’s also possible to use depth maps, which are images representing the geometry of an object.

Full animation effect

Animation is a series of images that create the illusion of movement. This effect involves the smooth transition of several images. The most important thing to remember is that the images should be similar to each other. The number of frames used to create the animation ranges from a minimum of 3 to up to a dozen (rarely). The best results are achieved when some elements of the project remain unchanged, and the shape of the changing objects is as similar as possible.

FLIP + 3D effect

Some effects can be combined. The most common combination is the flip effect with the 3D depth effect. This either involves supplementing the flip effect with an illusion of depth (if the flip effect predominates in the graphics) or adding the flip image change effect to the depth effect (if the depth effect predominates and is complemented by image change).
